Traveling by Amtrak from the San Diego Santa Fe Depot.

The Santa Fe Depot is located in beautiful downtown San Diego by the waterfront. The station itself is a national landmark and very beautiful as well as very accessible.

If you are traveling in a power wheelchair, I would recommend that you purchase your ticket either by phone or by going to the station before you travel because there is only one wheelchair space per car, and only a few of those have windows.  So, when you make your reservation, be sure to request a wheelchair space with a window.

In addition, I recommend you arrive at the station an hour before departure. This will give you time to confirm your arrangements for a window space and allow for the time it will take to board you in advance of the rest of the passengers.  In my experience, the staff is very helpful and will do their best to accommodate you.

In the event all of the window seats are taken, be sure to bring a good book or something else to do, because you will have a wall for a view.  Of course, if you are able to transfer into a regular seat, you will have many window options.

Also, bring your own snacks and beverages because it is not possible to move between cars in a wheelchair, and there is no food service at your seat.  Happily, there IS a nice big bathroom to roll your wheelchair right into.

Be sure to keep your ticket handy so when the conductor comes through the car to validate it you will not be hunting around for it!

Ok let’s ride!!!!

Side note: If you are traveling to the Los Angles Union station, it is a lot bigger than the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego so make sure you familiarize yourself with the online station layout ahead of time. Here is a link to the station website and Photos
